Dear October

Dear October,

Welcome to 2017.
Don’t worry, you’re not all that late -
there are still a couple more coming after you.
Have a seat, we’re just settling in
to coffee and cake.
The year is young yet. She is just now
coming into her prime, into her fullness
of beauty and wisdom.
Adorn her with your golden light,
your gusty breeze, your clear bright
starlit nights. Do your duty as we
toast your arrival with gourds
and cinnamon, wheat and laughter.
Change the dew to frost, and
show us the sunrise in hues of red.
Inspire the forest to shed,
the squirrels to hoard, and the
people to read by the light of a lantern.
Your crown is set, your table ready.
Let the feast begin.
