Our Christmas Tree is officially up, its lights twinkling their way through the end of November. Our new ritual of lighting the tree each night when we get home is quickly becoming one of my favorite parts of daily life, and I've been thinking lately about how to keep this cozy feel in our home yearlong.
I was recently inspired by one of my favorite Instagrammers @siobhanwatts (who has excellent daily stories featuring her sweet toddler Rory) to augment the darkening days of autumn with intentional lighting once the sun goes down. I've always just flipped on the overhead lights until bedtime, but her comments on how that harsh, too-bright light affects our mood really struck me.
I've spent all this effort trying to minimize our home, making things flow nicely and evoke calm, and have never once even considered the utility of "mood lighting," which I wasn't really convinced was a thing until Siobhan shared her photographer's eye on her stories.
Well, now I'm obsessed.
My Christmas Tree has given me that extra boost, and I'm now considering fairy lights and candles everywhere, weighing the effects of blinds versus curtains, and spending weird amounts of time staring squinty-eyed at darkened corners to see if they'd be better or worse with a warm lantern.
And I really can't tell you what a difference it makes to change the light in our space. "Mood lighting" is absolutely, definitely a thing. Just like our minds pick up the stress from cluttered spaces, I think we also change emotionally in response to the way things are visually lit, and, in the winter, what we really need is that lovely cozy warmth. Next up: Aromatherapy (ha!).
It's nice to have a creative project with a new medium to work through these chilly evenings! I've also brought out quilts and blankets and have remembered the joy of fuzzy socks and house robes.
